Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS) is a local charity based in Penrith who work with individuals, businesses and communities to help them become more sustainable.

Founded in 1998 as Eden Local Agenda 21, the charity changed its name in 2008 to reflect its work which had become County-wide.

The Charity aims to initiate innovative ideas and projects with the intention these become more widely adopted over time. The emphasis is on ACTION rather then just talking about what we might do.

We employ three part time staff and have the help of many dedicated volunteers, from our 9 trustees to our students gaining work experience in the office.

At present the bulk of the charity’s work is in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy including:

  • Cumbria Green Build Training Programme – this incorporates the annual Cumbria Green Build Festival and year round professional training programme. The project is part funded by ESF.

  • Sustainable Community Buildings Programme  – a partnership between CAfS, Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust and the Lake District National Park , realising investment of over £700,000 in energy efficiency and renewable measures in community buildings over the last 5 years.

  • Energy use in primary schools programme

  • Thermal imaging training with community groups

  • Advice on FiTs and RHIs

CAfS is also involved in shaping regional and local government policies on sustainability and climate change, at a strategic level.
